Character Experiment: Experience 1

Virtue 1: Commitment
I am going to focus on being committed. Commitment is described as "the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc." Being able to be committed to me, I feel would make me a better person. So therefore, if I have the virtue of commitment, I would be dedicated and focused to any cause/activity.I am picking this virtue to focus on because in the past I have been known to not be able to stay committed to anything for an extended period of time. I can't stay committed to friends, clubs, and many extracurriculars.I feel like this would help me in a lot of aspects of life. I plan on joining an extracurricular/club and staying in it for at least a year. Because my commitment problems usually stem from my boredom I will have to find new ways to make whatever activity I choose fun every time I go. I will try to volunteer somewhere for at least 6 months so I can find ways to give back to my community while also improving my commitment skills.

Virtue 2: Focus

I am going to try and improve my focusing skills. By focusing I mean being able to work on a task without getting distracted by my phone or other things that could cause me to prolong any assignment I am trying to work on. I am picking this virtue to work on because I feel it would benefit me in my life. For example, I would not get as distracted as I usually do while completing homework so therefore, I would have spent less time working on it. When I am assigned a project or homework, I usually start it but then I will check my social media, play games, go get a snack and then work on my assignment a little bit more, and this is a cycle that constantly repeats so I am always up later doing homework that should've taken me 15 minutes, instead it takes me an hour. My plan to successfully become more focused is to leave my phone in another room while I do my homework. If my phone is not at arms distance it no longer becomes a distraction because I would be too lazy to go get it all the way from the other room. Since my phone is my biggest distraction, removing it from where I do my homework would probably lead to me being more focused on my assignments rather than my social media.

Virtue 3: Affability

For my third virtue I am going to try and focus in being affable. Affable is defined as " being pleasant and at ease in talking to others" and so if I am affable, it means I am a nice person to talk to, and I am also social. This is going to be the biggest challenge for me because I am very introverted. However, I chose this virtue because I feel like I need to be more outgoing and friendly. I didn't choose this virtue to make like 200 new friends. I chose it so I could try and force myself to be more nice and easy to talk to. My plan for this virtue is to just start talking to people. I'm usually out on weekends and there are usually kids my age around so instead of being on my phone I would go and try to socialize.
